Queensland is one of the most active property markets in the country, and getting into it is more straightforward than most people expect. The entry point is the Salesperson Registration Certificate. Earn it, and you can work under a licensed agent doing the real work of selling and leasing property.
This guide walks through what the certificate involves, who it suits, the steps to get registered, and how the pathway opens up once you are in.
What the salesperson certificate is
The Salesperson Registration is the Queensland entry qualification for real estate. It is made up of 12 units that cover the practical knowledge a new salesperson needs: how listings work, the rules around selling and leasing, dealing with buyers and tenants, and the legal and ethical side of the job.
With the certificate in hand, you can work as a registered salesperson under the supervision of a licensed real estate agent. It does not let you run your own agency, but it does put you on the floor, earning and learning, which is exactly where a new career should start.
Who it suits
The certificate suits anyone ready to start in property and willing to learn on the job. You do not need prior experience. It works well for people changing careers, school leavers who want a practical path, and anyone who likes the idea of a role built on relationships and results rather than a desk and a fixed routine. If you enjoy talking to people, staying organised and chasing an outcome, the day-to-day will suit you.
The steps to get registered
- Complete the Salesperson Registration qualification (12 units) with a registered training provider. Archer Institute delivers the QLD Real Estate Salesperson course online and self-paced.
- Apply to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading for your salesperson registration certificate once the qualification is done.
- Find a role with a licensed agency, where you will work under the supervision of a licensed agent.
- Confirm current requirements with the Office of Fair Trading before you apply, as state rules can change.
Remember the two-step principle: the training provider issues the qualification, and the Office of Fair Trading issues the certificate. They are separate, and you need both.
Qualification first, certificate second
People sometimes assume the course and the certificate are the same thing. They are not. You study the units and earn a nationally recognised qualification through Archer Institute. You then take that qualification to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading, who issue the registration certificate that lets you legally work. Keeping the two steps clear saves confusion later. Our explainer on the certificate of registration versus a licence goes into this in more detail.
Where the pathway leads
The salesperson certificate is the start, not the summit. Once you have some experience and you want to list and sell in your own right, run a rent roll or open your own office, the next step is the full Real Estate Agent Licence. We set out that route in our guide to the QLD salesperson to agent licence upgrade.
